Despite better reviews and bigger cast, The Expendables 2 grossed $28.7 million in its opening weekend according to official estimates (via BoxOffice.com). That is 17% less than the first film back in 2010 ($34.8 million). Many predicted that The Expendables 2 will most definitely make more than the first chapter in the first weekend. The film received an "A-" CinemaScore, which should result in a good word-of-mouth. It will be interesting to see the numbers for next weekend.
Official domestic weekend estimate: $28.75 million for THE EXPENDABLES 2 from 3,316 locations. Location avg. = $8,670.— Boxoffice (@Boxoffice) August 19, 2012
Meanwhile, The Bourne Legacy continued its solid run with another $17.0 million, and the total is now $69.6 million. The Dark Knight Rises made $11.1 million, and it also passed the $400 million mark, which means that the film now stands at $409.9 million. It is now #12 film of all-time domestically.
