Despite initial estimates of a $40M - $50M weekend, Dark Shadows is now expected to gross a disappointing $28M domestically, despite last night being on track for $35M - $40M. This is a shock for Warner Bros. and analysts, especially after the success of the last Tim Burton/Johnny Depp team-up, Alice in Wonderland (which grossed over $1B worldwide). It made only $10.5M yesterday, and with a budget of $150M-$175M, one can only hope it now performs better overseas. Unsurprisingly, the weekend will belong to The Avengers. It's set to make $28M today, with a weekend estimate of $100M or more. Ticket sales are still incredibly high, so it's likely that Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble will have no trouble crossing this figure and breaking the records set by Avatar and The Dark Knight.
