Deadpool continues to exceed expectations almost a full year after it was released. 20th century Fox's first solo outing for The Merc with a Mouth did a lot better both critically and commercially than anyone could have predicted, and now the Ryan Reynolds-starrer has landed a WGA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside four much more high-brow movies: Fences, Hidden Figures, Nocturnal Animals, and Arrival.
The WGA has nominated comic book movies in the past (The Dark Knight and Guardians of the Galaxy, for example), but this must still be seen as something of a coup for the comparably explicit, somewhat controversial R-rated X-Men spinoff.
Does an Academy Award nom beckon next? Might be getting ahead of ourselves there, but it's certainly a possibility.
