Like Gwen Stacy and Uncle Ben, Bucky was a character who it was always thought would stay dead. As World War II drew to a close, Captain America and his sidekick attempted to stop an experimental drone plane launched by Baron Zemo. Unfortunately, Bucky failed to disarm it and it blew up over the North Atlantic, seemingly killing him and resulting in Cap spending decades frozen in ice before being discovered by The Avengers. However, in 2005, writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting brought Bucky back as The Winter Soldier. It turned out that his one-armed body was discovered by the Russians, and the amnesiac hero was brainwashed (and implanted with a bionic arm) into becoming a Soviet assassin and put into stasis between missions.
