Entertainment Weekly report that John Carter has made an underwhelming $500,000 at midnight showings in the US (this is a figure which has been confirmed by Disney). The studio are hoping that it will be on par with 2010 release Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which had a similarly soft opening but ended up reaching $30.1 million; a figure Disney would very much like to see the Andrew Stanton helmed sci-fi epic reach. However, it is worth baring in mind that the money taken at midnight screenings isn't necessarily an indication of a film's eventual success. In slightly more positive news, Disney has also announced that John Carter has posted the biggest opening day ever in Russia with an estimated $6.5 million.
