Once it was announced that mischief-maker Loki would be the primary cause of Marvel's The Avengers superhero team-up of a lifetime, and wouldn't be alone, many speculated that among the many extraterrestrial races of Marvel Comics' universe, the shapeshifting Skrulls were guaranteed. However, with highly-praised screenings being held recently, director-writer Joss Whedon took a press conference to set the record straight.
"The alien race are the Chitauri -- or a version of them -- because they are not one of the key races and they don’t have a storied history. That wasn’t the point. I know this debate will go on long after I’m dead. I would say it was the Kree-Skrull race."
