Part of the reason I hate prequels so much is that they ruin the mystery. Which is yet another reason I love Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, as it never fills in the blanks of who the Joker is or where he came from. Think about it, how less menacing was Darth Vader once you saw him as a nerdy little boy building C3PO or later on as a whiny teenager with no acting skills?
But of course there will always be demand from the fans who want every little detail pointed out to them, and in a clever new tie-in book for The Dark Knight Rises a few theories about the Joker's background are presented.
