Last night we heard reports that Chronicle director Josh Trank was in talks to take the reigns of Sony's long gestating Venom movie. In case you aren't aware of the character, Venom is one of Spider-Man's most popular villains. In essence the actual character is an alien symbiote, which has latched on to several different hosts over the years. The first of these being Peter Parker's rival Eddie Brock, who was played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi's disappointing Spider-Man 3. As popular as Venom is with comic fans, he does seem like an unusual choice for a solo movie outing. For starters, despite playing a heroic role at times he is most definitely a villainous character. Also, outside of his relationship with Spider-Man he doesn't really have much of a back story - an arc that would lend itself to some kind of origin tale.
