Accusations of whitewashing were leveled at the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie when the distinctly non-Asian Scarlett Johansson was cast in the lead role of "The Major" (Major Motoko Kusanagi in the original manga).
Though arguments have been made that the character should be played by the person best suited to the role regardless of ethnicity (something director Rupert Sanders has echoed), the general consensus seems to be that the part should have went to an Asian actress.
The Avengers star addressed the controversy for the first time during an interview with Marie Claire, without really delving into the issue at hand.
"I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive.
