Despite a brief cameo in THOR, Hawkeye was the only Avenger not to have been shown in full costume before Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble. That meant it was up to concept artist Andy Park to design his look for the big screen, although it was clear to fans that it was based on the costume designed by Bryan Hitch for The Ultimates. Talking to Marvel.com, Park had this to say about creating the right look for Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton. More of his comments can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

Hawkeye was one character where it wasn’t given to me from the get go. Charlie [Wen], Ryan [Meinerding] and I tackled it and we spent a week or two coming up with designs for Hawkeye, but we did know that it wasn’t going to be purple.
